Could Filial Responsibility Laws bite you?

Dad and child

Filial Responsibility Laws (in more than half the States) could surprise you when the State comes to family members to pay your relative’s long term care bills.

Children or other heirs may become responsible for parent care expenses. This may not be what you, as a parent, have in mind.

You want to be sure you’re not stepping on this land mine as you navigate caring for family.

A short article “Filial laws put kids on the hook for parents’ health-care costs” By Greg Iacurci illustrates what you may get yourself into.

You should have a discussion with a qualified, and experienced (all they do is estate planning and elder care) attorney. Where to find one?

In no particular order and not necessarily a complete list – but a place to start:

National Network of Estate Planning Attorneys

National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys

American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys

American College of Trust and Estate Counsel

National Association of Estate Planners and Councils
