Medicare … what and when?

What is Medicare?

Medicare is health insurance … what are the different Parts? (Note: Medicare does NOT pay for Long Term Care except in very limited cases!! That is what Long Term Care Insurance is for).

When are you eligible for Medicare and when must you enroll ? (the 3 months before, the month of, and 3 months after your birthday is your general window).* Getting Medicare started.

Note that you can enroll in Medicare and not be receiving Social Security benefits (they’re different benefit programs). However, you can enroll in Medicare at your Social Security office.

*Exceptions may apply if you are still working covered by an employer health plan that qualifies … suggest if this applies to you, that you contact Social Security during the general enrollment window to confirm if your employer plan qualifies (I would not assume that it does – best to find out for sure).
